Chapter 3

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, jagged shadows from the massive log palisade of the border town. Stone watchtowers loomed against the darkening sky, their braziers flaring to life. Vlad paused a hundred yards from the iron-reinforced gates, leaning on his obsidian staff.

"Alright, let's review the strategy," Vlad said, adjusting the collar of his midnight-blue mantle. He consciously willed the ambient dark mana that usually clung to him to dissipate. *Social stealth mode engaged. Reduce aggro radius to zero.* "I am an eccentric, slightly detached scholar of magical anomalies. You are my highly paid, fiercely independent consultant and guide."

Eli brushed a stray golden lock from her face, her pearlescent armor catching the last rays of the sun. "I don't need to act to be fiercely independent, Vlad. And I expect my 'consulting fee' to cover a room with a hot bath. Just try not to look like you're calculating the bone density of everyone we meet."

"I only do that when I'm bored," Vlad retorted, offering a faint smirk. "Remember, no flashy magic. We keep our power levels strictly business-casual."

The approach to the gates was bottlenecked by a checkpoint. Two guards with heavy halberds crossed their weapons as they neared, while a senior guardsman—a burly veteran with a scarred chin—stepped forward. His eyes immediately locked onto Vlad's skull-adorned robes, the ominous staff, and the thick leather grimoire resting on his hip.

"Halt," the senior guard barked, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword. "State your names, your origin, and the purpose of your visit. And declare any forbidden artifacts. You look like a man who carries a few."

Vlad adjusted his posture, channeling his inner mid-level manager facing an unexpected audit. "Greetings. I am Vlad, an independent researcher. We are currently conducting a localized field study on mana flow anomalies in the border regions. My equipment is strictly diagnostic. No contraband, no forbidden artifacts, just standard analytical tools."

The guard blinked, clearly struggling to process the dry, bureaucratic phrasing. "A... field study?"

"Exactly," Eli chimed in, her voice carrying the melodic but sharp cadence of elven nobility. She stepped slightly ahead of Vlad, her posture radiating casual authority. "I am Eli. I have been contracted to ensure this scholar doesn't wander into a troll den while staring at his notes. We require lodging, resupply, and access to the local archives."

The guard's gaze shifted to Eli, his suspicion momentarily overridden by surprise. Light elves were a rare sight here, and one acting as a bodyguard to a dark-robed human was even stranger. He straightened up instinctively, intimidated more by her haughty grace than Vlad's skulls.

"A light elf," the guard muttered, rubbing his neck. "Don't usually see your kind playing nursemaid."

Eli's eyes narrowed, a dangerous spark dancing in her emerald gaze. "I am a consultant, guardsman. Not a servant. I suggest you address me with the appropriate professional courtesy, unless you'd like me to demonstrate exactly why my services are so highly valued."

Vlad coughed to cover a chuckle. *High-level elf privilege. Better than any diplomatic immunity.*

"Hold on a moment," a raspy voice interrupted. A scribe, wearing the insignia of the local mage guild, stepped out from the guardhouse. He squinted at Vlad through thick spectacles. "Independent researcher? You reek of the dark arts. That staff is pure obsidian, and those robes are traditional necromantic garb. We don't need grave-robbers in this town. If you're a scholar, prove it. Show us a practical, harmless application of your 'diagnostics'. Otherwise, you can turn right around."

Vlad's mind raced. *Skill check. He wants a demonstration. Summoning a zombie is an instant game over. Death Spike is too aggressive. Vampiric Claw is definitely out.* He needed something that looked analytical.

"Very well," Vlad said smoothly. "If you require a demonstration of entropy resonance analysis, I can oblige."

He raised his left hand, focusing a minuscule fraction of his mana. He didn't cast a full spell, but rather tapped into the foundational mechanics of his Gloom curse. A small, controlled sphere of swirling, violet-black energy materialized above his palm. It wasn't a destructive projectile; it was a localized field of structural decay.

"May I?" Vlad asked, gesturing to a rusted, discarded iron buckler leaning against the guardhouse wall.

The scribe nodded warily.

Vlad gently tossed the sphere onto the shield. The dark magic washed over the metal, highlighting the micro-fractures and rust veins in a faint, pulsing purple light.

"As you can see," Vlad explained, adopting the tone of a presenter at a quarterly review, "by applying a controlled entropic field, I can map the structural integrity of the object. The highlighted areas indicate a seventy-three percent degradation in the molecular cohesion. It's a standard diagnostic procedure for assessing material fatigue."

The scribe stared at the glowing rust spots, thoroughly baffled but undeniably impressed. "I... see. Fascinating."

Eli leaned in, a playful smirk on her lips. "What my esteemed colleague means is that your spare shields are garbage, and a stiff breeze would shatter them. He's very thorough."

Vlad shot her a sidelong glance. "Thank you for the executive summary, Eli."

"Always here to optimize our communication," she whispered back, her shoulder lightly brushing his.

The senior guard cleared his throat, breaking the tension. "Right. Well. The magic looks harmless enough, as long as you keep it to rusty metal." He pulled a wooden token from his belt and handed it to Vlad. "You're cleared for entry. But listen closely: you must register at the chancellery by tomorrow noon. Curfew is at midnight. And if I hear even a whisper of you raising the dead, summoning spirits, or doing anything that makes the graveyard twitch, you'll be answering to the Inquisition. Understood?"

"Perfectly," Vlad said, pocketing the token. "Compliance with local regulations is our top priority."

The heavy iron gates groaned open, revealing the bustling interior of the border town. The sensory impact was immediate. The air was thick with the smell of coal smoke from the forges, roasting meat, and the unwashed scent of a hundred travelers. Taverns spilled warm, yellow light and raucous laughter into the cobblestone streets. Heavily armed adventurers, merchants shouting their wares, and wary locals navigated the crowded thoroughfares.

Vlad took a deep breath, his gamer instincts firing up. *New hub zone unlocked. The NPC density is high, and the ambient noise suggests a lot of active quest lines. Definitely a step up in difficulty.*

Eli walked beside him, her keen eyes scanning the alleys and rooftops. "It's loud," she noted, her nose wrinkling slightly. She pointed toward a narrow, unlit street where two shady figures were exchanging a small pouch. "And I'd advise against taking any shortcuts through there. The local wildlife seems less civilized than the wolves we fought."

"Agreed," Vlad said, keeping his staff close. "We stick to the main paths for now."

"So," Eli said, turning to him with a challenging smile, "we're in. What's the immediate plan, 'researcher'? Where is your highly paid consultant sleeping tonight?"

"First, we find an inn that doesn't look like it charges by the hour," Vlad replied, slipping effortlessly into their established banter. "Then, we gather intel. We need to know the political landscape, where the chancellery is, and what the local guild situation looks like."

"And my hot bath?"

"Consider it a non-negotiable clause in your contract," Vlad promised. "I'll handle the logistics and the budget. You just keep looking intimidating and translating my 'boring' magic into threats."

Eli laughed, a clear, musical sound that cut through the city's din. "Deal. But if you start talking about 'molecular cohesion' at dinner, I'm charging double."

Together, the dark mage and the light elf stepped deeper into the vibrant chaos of the city, ready to face whatever new trials this level had to offer.
